The blue pearl city is a small city in northern Morocco, it has beautiful natural surroundings, rich history and magnificent architecture, but what is famous for it is the bright blue walls of many buildings. Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 and began as a small Maghreb fortress for exiles from Spain, where it gradually welcomed Jews and Christian converts.   Why Is Chefchaouen Blue? Some will tell you that it is a symbol of Jewish solidarity. In the 1930s, numerous Jewish refugees arrived in Chefchaouen, fleeing Nazi persecution and the growing threat of war. Blue is meant to represent peace, security and the power of heaven. In this version of the story, the blue walls spread quickly from the city's Jewish quarter, until the entire city was glowing. Others say that the tradition of painting the walls in blue is Jewish, but it certainly dates back to the founding of the city, in the fifteenth century, when it was built around a castle used to defend the population against the Portuguese invaders. At this time, local Moroccans lived alongside the Jews and the Moriscos (former Muslims who converted to Christianity) for a century or more. Exploring The Blue Pearl City The narrow streets of the blue pearl of Chefchaouen do not try to ease the impact of the hills built on the city. In some cases, stone steps walk straight up the slope, giving your legs a good workout. But when the streets open in the public squares, the views over the city toward the nearby countryside of the countryside look spectacular. The mountains above the blue pearl city give the appearance of the horns and it is believed that this is where the name of Chefchaouen comes from (literally means "watch the horns" in the local dialect). But the rest of the time, keep looking around. This is a beautiful jaw city! It takes you to a different world.
