Qatar surprises people. One day you're standing in a 400-year-old souq breathing in oud and spices, and by evening you're riding a wave at a waterpark or watching camels sprint across the desert. It's a small country, but it packs in a strange amount of range.

Whether you've got 48 hours in Doha or a full week to explore, this guide walks you through the best things to do in Qatar right now, from Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art to Banana Island and the Inland Sea. We've grouped everything by the kind of day you're after, so you can skip straight to what fits your trip.

Planning to book any of these? Ootlah has exclusive rates and skip-the-line access on most of the experiences below, worth checking before you pay full price at the gate.

Art, Culture & Historic Sites

Start here if you want to understand Qatar, not just photograph it.

Souq Waqif

This is where Doha actually lives. Souq Waqif was once a trading post for Bedouins bringing wool and livestock into the city, and the restored maze of alleyways still feels like it. Wander through stalls selling spices, falcons, and traditional Arabic dress, then sit by the water and soak in the vibes at sunset. Go hungry; the food alone justifies the trip.

Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

I.M. Pei designed this building as his final project, and it shows. Set on its own island off the Corniche, MIA holds over a thousand years of Islamic art, manuscripts, ceramics, and textiles inside a structure that's arguably as striking as anything on display. Give yourself at least two hours.

National Museum of Qatar

Shaped like the desert rose crystal formations found in Qatar's own sand, this museum tells the country's story from pre-oil pearl diving to the skyline you see today. The immersive galleries and film installations make it one of the most photographed buildings in the Gulf, but the content holds up just as well as the architecture.

Qatar National Library

More than just a library, the Qatar National Library is an architectural landmark designed by world-renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, holding over a million printed books alongside a dedicated section for rare books and historical manuscripts. Even if you're not a book lover, it's worth visiting for the open interior design and naturally lit spaces alone.

Katara Cultural Village

Part amphitheater, part gallery district, part beach, Katara Cultural Village hosts everything from opera performances to traditional dhow-building demonstrations. Come for an exhibition, stay for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants.

Msheireb Downtown Doha

Billed as one of the world's first fully sustainable downtown regeneration projects, Msheireb blends heritage houses with modern architecture and underground cooling systems you won't even notice. It's a quieter, design-focused stop, good for an afternoon walk between museums.

Ahmed bin Ali Stadium

Built for the 2022 World Cup, Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan still hosts major matches and tours. Football fans can walk the pitch-side areas and see how Qatar's tournament legacy is holding up years later.

Grand Mosque Qatar

The Imam Abdul Wahhab Mosque, commonly called the Grand Mosque, is Qatar's largest and a genuinely calm place to spend an hour, whether or not you're religious. Dress modestly and check visiting hours for non-worshippers in advance.

Al Koot Fort

Al Koot Fort stands as a witness to Doha's history before it grew into the modern capital we know today. Built in the late 19th century for defensive and administrative purposes, it's now one of the most notable historic landmarks in the city center, and worth a quick stop on your way between Souq Waqif and the Corniche.

Leisure & Beach Activities

Qatar has quietly become one of the best family destinations in the Gulf, air-conditioned, walkable, and stacked with things kids actually want to do.

The Pearl Qatar

The Pearl Qatar, also known as Qatar's Pearl Island, is one of Doha's most elegant destinations, with a marina lined by luxury yachts, waterfront promenades, and a mix of international restaurants and boutiques. It's the kind of place where a quiet evening stroll and a shopping trip come together against a Mediterranean-style marina backdrop.

Old Doha Port

Before Doha grew into the city it is today, the Old Doha Port was its commercial heart and a hub for pearl-diving boats. Today you can walk along its waterfront and watch traditional dhows moored there, a scene that ties Qatar's maritime past to its modern present.

Desert Safari (Khor Al Adaid)

No list of things to do in Qatar is complete without a desert safari. Most trips head out toward Mesaieed or the Inland Sea, and include dune bashing in 4x4 vehicles, sandboarding, and a Bedouin-style dinner under the stars. Khor Al Adaid itself is a UNESCO-recognized nature reserve where the desert meets the sea in a rare scene you won't find in many places around the world.

Purple Island & Al Thakira Mangroves

Located near Al Khor, Purple Island and the Al Thakira Mangroves offer one of Qatar's most beautiful natural escapes. Visitors can kayak through the peaceful mangrove forests, walk along scenic wooden pathways, and enjoy birdwatching, especially during sunrise and sunset. It's the perfect destination for nature lovers looking to experience a quieter side of Qatar away from the city's busy attractions.

Qatar's Beaches

Qatar's warm coastline offers a variety of beach options to suit every taste. Katara Beach is clean and well-maintained right next to Katara Cultural Village, with sun loungers, watersports gear, and beachside cafés. Further south, Salwa Beach Resort offers a calmer atmosphere away from the Corniche crowds. Banana Island is a short ferry ride from Doha and gives you a full day that feels like an entirely different country, with its own private beach and water sports.

Shopping Destinations

Qatar has quietly become one of the best family destinations in the Gulf, thanks to its air-conditioned comfort, easy walkability, and no shortage of shopping destinations.

Villaggio Mall

Villaggio Mall is inspired by Venetian architecture, with indoor canals and ornate domes that make you feel like you're wandering through Venice rather than a shopping mall. The mall combines shopping and dining with an indoor amusement park suited to families with kids of all ages.

Doha Festival City

Doha Festival City is one of Qatar's largest shopping destinations, featuring hundreds of international brands, a wide selection of restaurants and cafés, and a variety of family-friendly entertainment options, making it an ideal place to spend a full day shopping and relaxing.

Place Vendôme Mall

Modeled on the Parisian square it's named after, Place Vendôme in Lusail is one of the most talked-about malls in the Gulf, over 580 stores, a canal running through the middle, and a nightly dancing fountain and laser show.

The Gate Mall

A striking piece of Doha architecture in its own right, the Gate Mall mixes design-forward retail with art installations, plus a solid lineup of restaurants and cafés.

Al Mirqab Mall

A smaller, more local-feeling mall in Al Sadd, good for everyday shopping without the crowds of the bigger malls, and a decent food court if you're in the area.

Doha Oasis

A newer entertainment and retail complex with an indoor rainforest theme, Doha Oasis mixes shopping, dining, and family attractions under one climate-controlled roof,  handy during the hotter months.

Family Entertainment Activities

Qatar is home to a variety of family-friendly attractions, offering fun experiences for visitors of all ages.

Angry Birds Qatar

Younger kids in particular tend to love this one. Angry Birds World brings the game to life with slingshot rides and interactive zones, and it sits right alongside Doha Quest, so you can easily combine both in one visit.

Doha Quest

This is the big indoor theme park inside Doha oasis, and it's honestly one of the easiest ways to kill a whole day with kids without stepping outside once. There's a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel you can see from the parking lot, and ride after ride packed into different zones. Come summer, when it's too hot to do anything outdoors, this is where half of Doha ends up.

Museum of Illusions

Part science center, part photo studio. The Museum of Illusions in Doha is built around rooms and installations that trick the eye,  great for kids, but honestly just as fun for adults trying to get the perfect optical-illusion shot.

Al Khor Family Park & Zoo

An hour north of Doha, Al Khor Family Park and Zoo combines gentle rides, green space, and a small zoo, a good slower-paced day out if you're staying near Al Khor or Al Thakira.

Outdoor Activities in Qatar

This is the other side of Qatar, the one that has nothing to do with air conditioning or indoor spaces.

Doha Corniche

A 7-kilometer waterfront promenade curving around Doha Bay, the Corniche is free, walkable, and arguably the best place to watch the skyline light up at sunset. Rent a bike, jog, or just sit on a bench with karak tea.

Lusail: Lusail Boulevard & Winter Wonderland

Lusail city is home to Lusail Boulevard, a waterfront promenade that's a great spot for walking or cycling with direct views of the city's modern towers. During the winter, Lusail also hosts an outdoor amusement park called Winter Wonderland, combining rides and family entertainment in a festive vibe.

Jiwan Island

Jiwan Island is one of Qatar's less crowded natural destinations, suited to those looking for a quiet outing away from the city's noise, with untouched scenery worth stopping for even just a few hours.

Aspire Park

One of Doha's most-loved green spaces, Aspire Park has a lake, running tracks, and shaded picnic areas right next to the Torch Tower. It's free, it's easy, and it's where a lot of Doha families spend their Friday mornings.

Oxygen Park

Right next to Aspire Park, this one's smaller and a lot less crowded. It's basically a long stretch of green with art pieces scattered around and shaded paths that make it perfect for an evening walk. Bring a blanket, grab some food from nearby, and just sit outside after the sun goes down. Locals treat it as the quieter alternative when Aspire Park feels too busy.

Panda House

Panda House in Qatar gives you a rare chance to see giant pandas up close, in an environment specifically designed to mimic their natural habitat. It's a completely different experience from everything else on this list, and a great fit for a family visit.

Camel Racing in Qatar

At Al Shahaniya, robot-jockey camel races are a genuinely unique spectator experience, free to watch, and a rare window into a tradition that's still very much alive in Qatar.

An Outing in the Qatari Desert

Nothing sums up Qatar's outdoor character like a trip into the heart of the desert itself. Whether you choose an overnight camping trip or just a short outing at sunset, Qatar's golden sands offer a peaceful experience far removed from the noise of the city.

Water Activities in Qatar

With such warm coastal waters, Qatar's beaches and sea activities are simply too good to pass up.

Meryal Waterpark

Lusail's Meryal Waterpark is the biggest waterpark in Qatar, with slides ranging from family-friendly lazy rivers to genuinely steep drops for thrill-seekers. Book ahead in summer, it fills up fast.

Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park

Less crowded than Meryal and built into a desert-themed landscape, Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park combines waterslides with adventure elements like zip lines and climbing walls.

Beach Water Sports

A variety of water sports suited to every level are available along Qatar's beaches. Try jet-skiing if you're after speed and excitement, or kayaking for a calmer way to explore the coastline and mangroves. Underwater explorers have diving and snorkeling to discover the coral reefs, while those after a more relaxed pace can go sailing or boating along the coast.

Aquarium Qatar

Qatar's first oceanic aquarium, inside the Hamad Port Visitors Centre, holds species from the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean across 17 tanks. There's also a touch tank and a 4D cinema on-site, making it an easy add-on to a beach day further south.
