When visiting Austria, the capital city of Vienna is a natural location to begin. This great city, with its classic architecture and elegant Viennese coffee houses, was once the centre of the Habsburg Empire. Vienna is home to many of Austria's most well-known tourist attractions, including Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere Palace, as well as many other exquisite royal houses. The Rathaus and Vienna State Opera, as well as St. Stephen's Cathedral and Karlskirche, are all noteworthy landmarks in the city's centre. Vienna has various museums, including the Albertina and the Art History Museum. On a lighter note, the Hundertwasser House and the lovely Prater amusement park are worth seeing.
Salzburg
The city of Salzburg is definitely one of the top things to do in Austria for tourists, because of its association with the movie The Sound of Music. One of the Sounds of Music's filming venues is the Mirabell Palace Gardens. However, the Old Town has many other fascinating sights to view, including Getreidegasse and its vintage business signage. Salzburg is also known for being the birthplace of the famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and you can see his birthplace, as well as the Mozart Residence, where his family lived, and a giant statue of him on Mozartplatz. The city's culture extends beyond music, with a fantastic collection of museums in the DomQuartier, which is home to the city's magnificent cathedral. Hohensalzburg Fortress, a towering castle steeped in history that dominates the cityscape, stands guard.
Innsbruck
Innsbruck, in the country's west, is another significant city worth visiting. Innsbruck, surrounded by the Alps, is a location that mixes winter sports with imperial architecture. The magnificent Golden Roof, with over 2,000 gilded tiles on its roof, is the city's most famous monument. Innsbruck's Old Town is also home to the beautiful Gothic Hofkirche and the old imperial residence Hofburg Palace. Otherwise, simply stroll through the old Old Town and take in the panorama of these historic buildings that line the Inn River, with the snow-capped Alps rising above the rooftops. The Nordkette ski fields are located above Innsbruck and are only 20 minutes away by funicular from the city centre.
Hallstatt
Few places in Austria are as well-known as the fairytale village of Hallstatt. This little community, nestled between lakes and mountains in the Salzkammergut area, is renowned for its beautiful surroundings. A stroll around the village will reveal swans swimming in the gorgeous lake on one side and quaint mountain cottages on the other. You'll have no issue thinking that Hallstatt is one of the top things to see in Austria after exploring the town and visiting its famed viewpoint. The Bone House, a modest ossuary containing human bones inside St. Michael's Chapel, is a good place to start for tourists. Skywalk Hallstatt Viewpoint, perched high above the town, provides breathtaking views of the Hallstätter See and the nearby Dachstein Mountains. Finally, visitors can explore the world's oldest salt mine the Hallstatt Salt Mine.
